How to calculate how much riprap you need

Riprap is priced by weight, so the calculation converts a volume into tons.

tons = ( area × thicknessft ) × density ÷ 2000
  1. Find the area. Length × width for a rectangle, or π × radius² for a circle.
  2. Convert thickness to feet. Divide the layer thickness in inches by 12.
  3. Find the volume. Multiply area by thickness in feet to get cubic feet.
  4. Add waste. 5–10% covers settling and slope irregularities.
  5. Convert to weight. Multiply the volume by your rock class’s placed density.
  6. Convert to tons. Divide the total weight in pounds by 2,000.

A 30×10 ft slope, covered 18 inches deep with medium riprap:
