MaterialCalculate started with a simple frustration: most online calculators either oversimplify the maths or bury it under ads. You get one number, no context, and no way to check whether it’s right. That is not much use when you are standing in a builders’ merchant deciding what to put on the truck.

The Method

How to estimate material for any project

Whether you are pouring a slab, spreading gravel or filling a raised bed, the estimate follows the same five steps. Understanding them means you can sanity-check any number — including one a contractor hands you.

Measure the area

Length and width in feet. For circles use π × radius². For triangles use ½ × base × height. For an L-shaped area, split it into two rectangles and add them — that single trick handles most awkward layouts.

Decide the depth

This is where most estimates fail, because depth is quoted in inches while length and width are in feet. Four inches is 0.333 feet, not 4. Divide the inches by 12 before you multiply anything.

Multiply for volume

Length × width × depth gives cubic feet — the raw quantity, before any allowance.

Convert to the unit your supplier uses

Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards. Bulk material is sold by the yard or the ton; bagged material by yield per bag. If the supplier quotes tons, you need the density, not just the volume.

Add waste and round up

Add 5–10%, then round up to the increment they actually sell — a quarter yard, a whole bag, a full pallet.

The one number worth memorising is 27. A cubic yard is a cube three feet on every side: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. Dividing by 3 instead of 27 is the classic error, and it makes an order nine times too big.

What does a cubic yard weigh?

A cubic yard is a fixed volume, never a fixed weight. This table is the difference between a pickup that copes and a pickup that does not.

Common Mistakes

Why material estimates go wrong

After the geometry, nearly every bad estimate comes down to one of these. Each of them costs money.

Mixing inches with feet

The most common error in the trade. Depth is in inches, length and width in feet. Divide by 12 first, or the number is meaningless.

Confusing volume with weight

A yard of mulch and a yard of concrete fill the same space and weigh five times different. If the supplier prices by the ton and you calculated in yards, you must convert using density.

Ordering the exact calculated amount

The raw geometry assumes a perfectly flat, perfectly excavated site. No site is. Add waste, then round up to the increment they sell.

Forgetting that aggregates compact

Gravel laid 5 inches loose is not a 5-inch base once compacted. A compacted-depth spec needs meaningfully more material than the raw depth suggests.

Bagging a job that wants ready-mix

Above about half a cubic yard, bags cost more per yard and cost you a day of mixing. Price the truck before you fill a trolley.

Trusting a payload you have not checked

A half-ton pickup carries roughly one cubic yard of gravel or soil — but two to three yards of mulch. Weight limits you, not the size of the bed.

Skimping on the sub-base

Concrete and pavers laid on soft ground fail regardless of thickness. A well-bedded 4-inch slab outlasts a badly bedded 6-inch one.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

27. A cubic yard is a cube measuring three feet on every side (3 × 3 × 3 = 27), which is why cubic-foot totals are divided by 27 to get cubic yards.

How much waste should I add to my order?

5–10% covers most projects — uneven ground, spillage and cutting. Irregular shapes or a site with a lot of grade change can push that closer to 10–15%. Every calculator lets you set your own waste percentage.

Why does a cubic yard of one material weigh more than another?

Should I buy bags or order bulk?
