How the calculation works
volume (yd³) = (area × thickness in / 12) / 27 × (1 + waste%)
trucks = ceil(volume / 10)
gravel weight (tons) = gravel volume (yd³) × 1.35
- Multiply lot length by width to get the total slab area.
- Convert slab thickness from inches to feet by dividing by 12.
- Multiply area by thickness in feet, then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
- Add your waste percentage to account for subgrade variation and spillage.
- Divide by 10 for truck loads, and repeat the volume calculation with base thickness for gravel needs.
Worked example
A 100 ft by 50 ft parking lot at 5 in thick, with 10% waste:
Area: 100 × 50 = 5,000 ft². Volume: (5,000 × 5 / 12) / 27 = 77.2 yd³. With 10% waste: 77.2 × 1.10 = 84.9 yd³, which rounds up to 9 truck loads at 10 yd³ each.
Adding a 4 in gravel base over the same area: (5,000 × 4 / 12) / 27 = 61.7 yd³ of gravel, or about 83 tons at 1.35 tons per compacted cubic yard.
