Material profile
For the calculator’s default 50 ft × 12 ft single-course driveway at 2.5 inches deep, you’ll need about 5.0 cubic yards, or roughly 10 tons of hot mix asphalt including an 8% waste allowance, at an estimated bulk cost of $1,416.
Asphalt needed for common driveway sizes and builds
These estimates use dense-graded hot mix asphalt at 3,915 lb per cubic yard with an 8% waste allowance built in.
| Project | Depth | Cubic yards | Tons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-car driveway, 300 sq ft | 2.5 in | 2.50 yd³ | 4.89 tons |
| Standard driveway, 400 sq ft | 2.5 in | 3.33 yd³ | 6.53 tons |
| Base + topcoat driveway, 600 sq ft | 4 in | 8.00 yd³ | 15.66 tons |
| Double driveway, base + topcoat, 800 sq ft | 4 in | 10.67 yd³ | 20.88 tons |
| Heavy-duty / RV driveway, 500 sq ft | 5 in | 8.33 yd³ | 16.31 tons |
Driveway asphalt mix types, weight and finish
| Type | Weight per yd³ | Best for | Drainage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot mix asphalt (dense-graded) | 3,915 lb | Residential driveways | Impermeable |
| Premium fine-grade asphalt | 3,950 lb | Finish topcoat, curb appeal | Impermeable |
Figures are for dry material. Wet or freshly delivered material can weigh noticeably more.
How to calculate driveway asphalt you need
- Measure the driveway length × width in feet, including the apron and any turnaround areas.
- Choose your build single-course (2.5in) for standard use, base + topcoat (4in) or heavy-duty (5in) for RVs and trucks.
- Convert to cubic yards multiply area by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27.
- Add waste add about 8% for compaction, tack coat overlap, and trimming at the edges.
- Convert to tons multiply cubic yards by the mix’s density (about 3,900-3,950 lb/yd³) and divide by 2,000.
Worked example
Using the calculator’s default 50 ft × 12 ft single-course driveway at 2.5 inches deep with hot mix asphalt:
- Area50 ft × 12 ft = 600 sq ft
- Depth in feet2.5 in ÷ 12 = 0.21 ft
- Volume600 sq ft × 0.21 ft = 125 cu ft
- Plus 8% waste125 × 1.08 = 135 cu ft
- Cubic yards135 ÷ 27 = 5.0 yd³
- Weight (hot mix asphalt, 3,915 lb/yd³)5.0 × 3,915 = 19,575 lb
- Tons19,575 ÷ 2,000 = 9.79 tons
- Order amountround up to 10 tons, or about 270 bags of cold patch at 0.5 cu ft each
Recommended depth by project
| Project | Recommended depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-course driveway | 2.5 in | Standard depth for typical passenger-vehicle driveways |
| Base + topcoat driveway | 4 in | Two-lift install: compacted base course plus a topcoat |
| Heavy-duty / RV driveway | 5 in | Extra thickness for RVs, boats, or heavier vehicles |
| Repair overlay | 1.5-2 in | Resurfacing over an existing sound asphalt driveway |
| Shared / commercial driveway | 5-6 in | Higher traffic volume driveways shared by multiple vehicles |
Bags or bulk delivery?
Bagged cold patch is only meant for small pothole and edge repairs on an existing driveway. A new driveway install needs hot mix delivered by the truckload and compacted immediately with a roller while it’s still hot, so this is always a bulk-order, contractor job rather than a bag-at-a-time one.
- Small repairsunder 0.5 ton (about 20 bags) — cold patch handles potholes and edge crumbling on an existing driveway.
- Resurfacing patches0.5 to 2 tons — still workable with cold mix, though it costs more per ton than a hot mix overlay.
- New driveway installsover 2 tons — always order hot mix by the truckload from a paving contractor.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the base course on a single-lift drivewaya 2.5in topcoat placed directly on soft or ungraded subgrade will crack and rut within a few seasons — compact a gravel base first.
- Underestimating a two-course buildbase + topcoat driveways use roughly 60% more material than a single-course build at the same footprint — make sure you’re pricing the right depth.
- Paving in cold or wet weatherhot mix compacts poorly and bonds weakly below about 50°F or on a wet surface, shortening the driveway’s life.
- Parking on new asphalt too soonasphalt is driveable within 24-48 hours but keeps curing for 6-12 months — avoid parking in the same spot repeatedly during that window.
- Ignoring slope toward the garage or housea driveway that slopes toward a structure directs water against the foundation — grade it to drain away instead.
- Not sealing the driveway after curingsealcoating about 6-12 months after installation protects the surface from UV and oil damage and extends its life significantly.
What this calculator assumes
Adjust your result if your project differs from these.
- Depth is the compacted (finished) depth, not the loose truck-bed depth.
- Density assumes standard dense-graded hot mix asphalt.
- 8% waste covers compaction, tack overlap, and trimming at edges and joints.
- Prices are for material only; grading, base prep, and paving labor are separate.
- Subgrade is assumed graded and compacted before paving; a base course is assumed present for two-course builds.
- Bag coverage assumes 0.5 cu ft cold patch bags for repairs, not full driveway installs.
Common questions
How many tons of asphalt does a driveway need?
For the calculator’s default 600 sq ft single-course driveway at 2.5 inches, you’ll need about 5 cubic yards, or roughly 10 tons of hot mix asphalt.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
2.5 inches single-course is standard for passenger vehicles; go to a 4-inch base + topcoat build or 5 inches for RVs and trucks.
What's the difference between single-course and two-course driveways?
A single-course driveway is one topcoat lift over an existing compacted base. A base + topcoat driveway adds a full 2-3in structural asphalt base lift underneath for greater durability.
How much does an asphalt driveway cost?
For the calculator’s default 600 sq ft example, material alone runs about $1,416 — total installed cost including grading, base, and labor is typically several times the material cost.
How long does a new asphalt driveway last?
A well-built asphalt driveway typically lasts 15-20 years with periodic sealcoating and crack repair.
Do I need a permit for a new asphalt driveway?
Many municipalities require a permit for new driveway construction or for work near the street right-of-way — check local requirements before paving.
When should I sealcoat a new asphalt driveway?
Wait 6-12 months after installation so the asphalt fully cures before applying the first sealcoat.
Can I install an asphalt driveway myself?
Grading and base prep are DIY-feasible, but placing and compacting hot mix asphalt requires a paving crew with a spreader and roller — most homeowners hire this part out.
What slope should a driveway have?
Aim for at least a 1-2% slope away from the garage or house so water drains off instead of pooling against the structure.
Is gravel or asphalt cheaper for a driveway?
Gravel is cheaper upfront, but asphalt needs far less ongoing maintenance and holds up better to daily vehicle traffic over its lifespan.
