How to calculate aggregate base course you need

tons = ( area sq ft × depth in ÷ 12 ÷ 27 ) × density lb/yd³ ÷ 2000
  1. Measure the area length × width in feet for a rectangular pad, or radius² × π for a circular one.
  2. Set the compacted depth 4in for foot paths, 6in for driveways, 8in for road sub-base.
  3. Convert to cubic yards divide the cubic-foot volume by 27.
  4. Add waste add 10% for compaction settling and spillage during spreading.
  5. Convert to tons multiply cubic yards by the material’s density (2,800-3,000 lb/yd³) and divide by 2,000.

Worked example

Using the calculator’s default 50 ft × 10 ft driveway at 6 inches with graded aggregate base:

Bags or bulk delivery?

Bagged ABC (typically 50 lb bags) costs several times more per ton than bulk delivery, so it only makes sense for very small repairs or fence-post backfill. Once a job passes about half a ton, bulk delivery plus the flat delivery fee comes out cheaper — and you avoid hauling and cutting open dozens of bags.

  • Small repairsunder 0.5 ton (about 20 bags) — bags avoid paying a delivery minimum for a tiny job.
  • Medium jobs0.5 to 3 tons — compare the total bag cost against bulk price plus the delivery fee before deciding.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing loose and compacted volumedelivered ABC is loose and settles roughly 20-25% once compacted, so ordering by the finished compacted depth (as this calculator does) is correct — ordering by loose delivered depth under-orders the job.
  • Skipping geotextile fabricon clay or soft soil, base course sinks into the mud without a fabric separation layer, and the sub-base loses strength over time.
  • Not compacting in liftsplacing more than about 4 inches at once often leaves the bottom of the layer under-compacted, even with a plate compactor.
  • Ignoring subgrade prepnot removing topsoil, roots, or organics before placing base course leads to settling and rutting later.
  • Using open-graded stone instead of dense-gradedclean stone with no fines won’t lock together under load and stays soft; dense-graded ABC with fines is what compacts to a hard, stable surface.
  • Forgetting crown or slope for drainagea flat base lets water pond on the surface, softening the base and undermining it from below.

Common questions

What is aggregate base course made of?

ABC is a well-graded mix of crushed stone from dust up to about 1.5in, engineered so the fines lock the larger pieces together when compacted. Graded aggregate base weighs about 3,000 lb per cubic yard.

How deep should ABC be for a driveway?

6 inches compacted is standard for passenger vehicles over typical clay or loam soil. Go to 8-10 inches for RVs, trucks, or soft or wet subgrade.

Can ABC be the final driveway surface?

Yes, many gravel driveways are just compacted ABC. For a cleaner look, top it with 1-2 inches of a decorative gravel or chip-and-seal wearing course.

Do I need geotextile fabric under ABC?

Recommended on clay, sand, or any soil that pumps mud when wet. Fabric keeps the base from mixing into the subgrade and losing strength over time.

How much does aggregate base compact down?

Loose ABC settles roughly 20-25% once compacted, which is why this calculator’s depth is the finished compacted depth, not the loose spread depth.

What's the difference between ABC and crusher run?

They’re very similar dense-graded products; crusher run is the more common trade name in some regions, while ABC typically follows a certified gradation spec for road work.

How many tons are in a cubic yard of ABC?

About 1.4 to 1.5 tons, depending on the material — graded base runs 3,000 lb/yd³, limestone about 2,800 lb/yd³, and recycled concrete about 2,900 lb/yd³.

Can I compact ABC without a plate compactor?

Hand-tamping works for very small areas but won’t reach the density a plate compactor or roller achieves; under-compacted base settles and ruts under vehicle weight.

How much ABC do I need for an 8 inch road base?

A 2,400 sq ft road segment at 8 inches needs about 65 cubic yards, or roughly 98 tons including 10% waste — see the reference table above.

Should I water ABC before compacting?

A light, even wetting helps the fines bind and lock the aggregate together; too much water causes pumping and instability under the roller.
