Vinyl fence panels come in fixed widths, usually 6 or 8 ft, so the calculator divides your total fence length (plus a waste allowance for corners and cuts) by the panel width and rounds up to a whole panel. Posts are spaced at one per panel width, so the post count works out to the panel count plus one extra post to close out the run.

How to calculate vinyl fence materials
- Measure the total run of your fence line in feet, including any turns.
- Add waste 5 to 10% to cover corner posts, gate posts, and cutting mistakes.
- Divide the adjusted length by your panel width (6 ft or 8 ft) and round up.
- Add one post for the end of the run, since posts are needed at both ends of every panel.

Setting Vinyl Fence Posts
Vinyl posts rely on concrete footings for strength since the panels themselves add very little rigidity. Dig post holes below your local frost line (commonly 24 to 48 in depending on climate) and to at least a third of the post’s above-ground height. Backfill with concrete, not just tamped soil, and figure roughly one bag of quick-set concrete per post as a starting estimate. Corner and gate posts take more load than line posts, so consider oversized posts or extra concrete at those spots.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting gate postsgate openings need larger, more heavily anchored posts than standard line posts, and they’re priced separately from panel kits.
- Skipping the waste allowancecorners, slopes, and a bad cut or two will eat into your panel count fast if you order exactly to the inch.
- Assuming panels flex around cornersvinyl panels are rigid, so each direction change needs its own corner post and a fresh panel run.

What's the difference between privacy and semi-privacy vinyl?
Privacy panels have interlocking boards with no gaps for full screening. Semi-privacy panels leave small gaps or spaced pickets for airflow and visibility.
Do vinyl fence posts need concrete footings?
Yes. Vinyl posts are hollow and get their strength from the concrete footing below grade, not from the panel attached to them.
How deep should vinyl fence post holes be?
Typically below your local frost line, often 24 to 36 in, with the hole diameter about three times the post width.
