How to Calculate Rainwater Collection Volume

Gallons = Catchment Area (sq ft) × Rainfall (in) × 0.623 × Runoff Coefficient
  1. Measure your roof’s catchment area as a horizontal footprint (length x width), not the sloped surface.
  2. Decide how much rainfall you’re planning for, either a single storm or a typical monthly total.
  3. Estimate your runoff coefficient based on roof material, or use 85% as a general asphalt shingle default.

A single one-inch storm on a modest roof can fill more barrels than most people expect, which is why this example needs 12 standard 55-gallon barrels for just 1,200 sq ft of catchment.
