Gabion Basket Fill Calculator

Gabion baskets are priced by the ton, but you plan them by the cubic foot. This calculator converts your basket footprint and depth into cubic yards, tonnage, and total fill cost for rip rap, river stone, or crushed rock.

Material profile

Multiply the basket’s length and width by its fill depth (usually the basket’s full height) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by the fill material’s weight per cubic yard (roughly 2,600-2,800 lb depending on rock type) and divide by 2,000 to get tons, then add your waste percentage and round up to a sensible order size, since suppliers sell rock by the ton, not the exact decimal.

Choosing Gabion Fill Rock

Fill rock needs to stay inside the mesh openings and pack reasonably tight. These are the common options and what each is best suited for.

Figures are for dry material. Wet or freshly delivered material can weigh noticeably more.

How to calculate gabion fill rock you need

Tons = ((Length × Width × Depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × lb per cu yd ÷ 2000 × (1 + waste%)
  1. Measure the basket’s length and width footprint.
  2. Set fill depth usually the full basket height, entered in inches.
  3. Calculate volume length × width × depth converted to cubic feet, then cubic yards.
  4. Convert to tons multiply cubic yards by the rock’s weight per cubic yard and divide by 2,000.
  5. Add waste and round up 5-8% covers voids and settling, then round to your supplier’s order increment.

Worked example

Here’s the math for a 6 x 3 ft basket filled 36 in deep with 4-8 in rip rap and 5% waste.

  • Basket footprint6 x 3 ft = 18 sq ft
  • Fill depth36 in
  • Volume56.7 cu ft = 2.1 cu yd
  • Weight per cu yd (rip rap)2,800 lb
  • Tons needed before waste2.94 tons
  • Tons to order (5% waste, rounded up)3.0 tons
  • Bagged equivalent114 bags
  • Bulk delivered cost$370.00

Bags or bulk delivery?

Bagged rock makes sense for touch-ups and very small baskets, but the math stops working in your favor fast. A single basket like the 6 x 3 ft example above already needs roughly 114 bags at typical bag sizes, which usually costs far more than ordering bulk by the ton. Once a project crosses roughly 1-2 tons of fill, bulk or delivered material is almost always cheaper per ton, even after paying a delivery fee.

  • Calculate tonnage before pricing bagsrun the numbers in cubic yards and tons first, then compare against bagged pricing for your quantity.
  • Confirm delivery accessbulk delivery trucks need a clear path to dump near the basket location; tight yards may need a wheelbarrow relay from the street.
  • Check mesh opening sizerock must be larger than the basket’s mesh openings on at least one dimension or it will work its way out over time.
  • Order a few percent extrawaste from voids, settling, and spillage during fill is normal, so don’t order the bare minimum.

Common mistakes

  • Using rock sized too close to the mesh openingrock that’s too small works its way through the mesh over time, undermining the fill and the wall’s face.
  • Skipping the waste percentagevoids, settling, and spillage during fill typically eat 5-10% more material than the raw volume math suggests.
  • Not accounting for internal diaphragmslong baskets need internal dividing panels to hold their shape, which this calculator doesn’t price separately.
  • Comparing bagged and bulk pricing after buyingrun the tonnage numbers first. Bagged rock can cost several times more per ton than a bulk delivery for anything beyond a small basket.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • The basket interior is treated as a simple rectangular volume (length x width x depth).
  • Fill depth equals the basket’s usable interior height, entered in inches.
  • Material weight per cubic yard is based on the rock type you select.
  • Waste percentage covers voids, settling, and spillage during fill.
  • Tonnage is rounded up to a practical order size, not left as a raw decimal.

Common questions

How much does gabion basket rock weigh?

It depends on the rock type, but figure roughly 2,600-2,800 lb per cubic yard for typical rip rap, river stone, or crushed rock.

What size rock should I use in a gabion basket?

Rock should be sized larger than your basket’s mesh openings, commonly 4-8 in for standard gabion mesh.

Should I buy bagged rock or bulk for a gabion basket?

For anything beyond a small basket or touch-up, bulk or delivered rock is almost always cheaper per ton than bagged material.

Why do I need to round up my tonnage order?

Suppliers sell by the ton, and a small buffer covers voids, settling, and any measurement variance in the field.
