Above-Ground Pool Base Calculator

A pool base pad that’s too thin or uneven leads to wrinkled liners and low spots within a season. This calculator figures the sand or stone dust volume for your pool footprint at the depth you set.

Material profile

Pool base material is calculated from your pool footprint area times the base depth you set, usually 2 in, converted to cubic feet and then cubic yards. A waste percentage is added for compaction loss and grading, and the volume is converted to tons using the selected material’s weight per cubic yard, then rounded up to the nearest order-friendly amount.

Pool base material comparison

Both sand and stone dust work under an above-ground pool liner, but they compact differently.

Sand vs. stone dust for pool base pads
MaterialWeight per Cubic YardBest For
Masonry/mason sand2,600 lbStandard smooth base, most common choice
Stone dust2,700 lbFirmer base that compacts harder than sand

Pool base material weight by type

Approximate weight of one cubic yard, by type.
TypeWeight per yd³Best forDrainage
Masonry/mason sand2,600 lbStandard smooth pool basePoor, compacts smooth
Stone dust2,700 lbFirmer, more stable basePoor, compacts firm

Figures are for dry material. Wet or freshly delivered material can weigh noticeably more.

How to calculate base sand you need

Tons = (Pool area x Depth in ft x (1 + Waste%) / 27) x (lb per cu yd / 2000)
  1. Measure the pool footprint diameter for round pools, or length and width for oval or rectangular pools.
  2. Set your base depth 2 in is standard for above-ground pool base pads.
  3. Calculate volume area times depth, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.
  4. Convert to tons multiply cubic yards by the material’s weight per yard, then divide by 2,000.
  5. Round up to order most yards sell in whole or half-ton increments with a delivery minimum.

Here’s the math for an 18 ft diameter pool base at 2 in deep.

Bags or bulk delivery?

For a pool base this size, bulk delivery is almost always cheaper and less work than bags once you’re over about a half ton. A pallet of 50 lb bags gets heavy fast for the volume a pool pad needs.

  • Order bulk for pads over about 1 tonat 2-2.5 tons for a typical 18 ft pool, bulk delivery beats hauling 40-50 bags from the store.
  • Confirm delivery accessdump trucks need a clear path to the backyard, or you’ll be wheelbarrowing sand a long distance.
  • Buy bagged for touch-ups or small poolsunder about a half ton, small pools or repairs, bagged sand from a hardware store is more practical than a minimum delivery fee.
  • Round up to the nearest half ton with your suppliermost sand and stone dust yards sell by the ton with a delivery minimum, so round up rather than order short.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping compactionloose sand settles unevenly under water weight – tamp the base in thin lifts and check level with a long straightedge before setting up the pool.
  • Leaving grass or organic material underneathgrass and roots decompose under the pad and create low spots months later – strip sod and roots before adding base material.
  • Using playground or beach sandfine, rounded sand doesn’t compact or hold a level surface as well as angular masonry sand or stone dust.
  • Going too deepmore than 2-3 in of loose base is harder to compact evenly and increases the chance of soft spots – keep it thin and well-tamped.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • Base area is calculated from the pool footprint (circle, rectangle, or oval) you enter.
  • 2 in is used as the standard base depth unless you change it.
  • Waste percentage accounts for compaction loss and an uneven sub-grade.
  • Material weight per cubic yard is based on the sand or stone dust type selected.
  • Bagged alternative assumes standard 50 lb bags for comparison against bulk delivery.

Common questions

How deep should the base be under an above-ground pool?

2 in of compacted sand or stone dust is standard – enough to level the ground and cushion the liner without being so deep it’s hard to compact evenly.

Should I use sand or stone dust under my pool?

Masonry sand is the most common choice and compacts to a smooth, even surface; stone dust compacts firmer and holds its shape a bit better on uneven ground.

Do I need to remove grass before adding pool base sand?

Yes, strip sod and roots first – organic material decomposing under the pad causes low spots and an uneven liner within a season.

How many bags of sand do I need for an 18 ft pool?

For an 18 ft pool at 2 in deep, expect around 90-95 standard 50 lb bags, though bulk delivery is usually cheaper at that volume.

Can I use paver base or crusher run instead of sand?

Some installers use stone dust or fine crusher run for a firmer base, but avoid anything with large aggregate that could puncture the liner.
