How to calculate how much sand you need

Sand is priced by weight, so the calculation converts a volume into pounds or tons.

weight = ( area × depthft ) × density  lb per cu ft
  1. Find the area. Length × width for a rectangle, or π × radius² for a circle.
  2. Convert depth to feet. Divide the depth in inches by 12.
  3. Find the volume. Multiply area by depth in feet to get cubic feet.
  4. Add waste. 5–10% covers spillage and settling.
  5. Convert to weight. Multiply the volume by your sand’s density — around 90 to 100 lb per cubic foot.
  6. Divide by bag size and round up, or order the equivalent in tons for bulk delivery.

Worked example

An 8×8 ft sandbox, filled 6 inches deep, using 50 lb bags of play sand:

Filling a sandbox or laying a sand base: a quick checklist

How much sand do I need for a sandbox?

For a standard 4×4 ft sandbox filled 6 inches deep, you need about 8 cubic feet of sand, roughly 800 lb or 16 × 50 lb bags of play sand.

How much sand do I need for paver base or leveling?

A leveling or bedding layer of sand under pavers is typically 1 inch deep, which works out to about 0.083 cubic feet per square foot, or roughly 8 lb per square foot.

What is the difference between play sand and paver sand?

Play sand is washed and screened fine sand, safe for sandboxes and free of large debris. Paver sand, also called leveling or bedding sand, is coarser and compacts better, making it suited to supporting pavers and patio stones.

How deep should a layer of paver sand be?

About 1 inch after compaction is standard for a bedding layer under pavers. Order slightly more loose sand than that, since sand settles and compacts once tamped.

How much does a ton of sand cover?
