Why density varies by rock class
Placed riprap always has gaps (voids) between the individual stones — it’s never a solid mass of rock. Larger stone classes tend to interlock a little differently than smaller ones, which is part of why light, medium, and heavy riprap don’t share exactly the same placed density, even though they’re the same base material.
