How to calculate decomposed granite, accounting for compaction
- Decide the finished, compacted depth. 2″ for a pathway, 3″ for a patio, 4″+ for a driveway.
- Account for compaction. Divide by (1 − compaction factor) to find the loose depth to spread before rolling.
- Find the loose volume. Multiply the loose depth by your area to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.
- Add waste. 5–10% covers spillage and edge loss.
- Convert to weight. Multiply cubic yards by density (roughly 2,700–2,800 lb/yd³), then divide by 2,000 for tons.

A 10 × 10 ft pathway, 2 inches compacted, natural DG, 15% compaction factor:
