Start with your room’s gross square footage (length × width), subtract any openings like closets or fireplaces that won’t get flooring, then add a waste percentage to cover cuts, defects, and pattern matching. Divide that adjusted area by the coverage per box for your chosen material (20-24 sq ft depending on plank size) and round up to the nearest whole box, since flooring can’t be bought in partial boxes.

How to calculate how many flooring boxes you need
- Measure the room’s length and width to get gross square footage.
- Subtract openings closets, fireplaces, or other areas that won’t be floored.
- Add waste 10% is a solid default for a straight-lay install.
- Divide by box coverage 20-24 sq ft per box depending on the plank size, and round up.
- Add underlayment most floating floors need an underlayment roll under the whole area.

With laminate at 20 sq ft per box and 10% waste, that room needs 11 boxes.
Should I buy extra flooring beyond the calculator's total?
Keeping one full spare box on hand for future repairs is common practice, on top of the waste percentage already built into the total.
Do I need underlayment under engineered or solid hardwood?
Often yes for floating installs, but nail-down or glue-down solid hardwood may use felt paper or none at all. Check your product’s install instructions.
Can I mix flooring boxes from different production runs?
Avoid it where possible. Different runs can have visible shade differences even when the product name and color match.
