How to calculate limestone needed

Limestone is priced and delivered by weight, so the goal is converting a volume into tons.

tons = ( area × depth ÷ 27 ) × density
  1. Find the area. Length × width for a rectangle, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² for a circle, in square feet.
  2. Multiply by depth. Convert depth to feet and multiply by area to get cubic feet.
  3. Add waste. 5–10% covers compaction and uneven ground.
  4. Convert to cubic yards. Divide cubic feet by 27.
  5. Multiply by density. Use your limestone type’s tons-per-cubic-yard figure to get the final tonnage.
