Material profile

A standard 6×6 ft sandbox filled 12 inches deep needs about 1.33 cubic yards (1.77 tons) of washed play sand, or roughly 75 bags at 50 lb each once you add a 5% waste allowance. A shallower 9-inch play area under equipment needs about 25% less material per square foot.

Play sand needed for common project sizes

Cubic yards and tons below use washed play sand at 2,650 lb per cubic yard, with no waste factor added.

How to calculate play sand you need

tons = ( length ft × width ft × depth in ÷ 12 ÷ 27 ) × density lb/yd³ ÷ 2000
  1. Measure the play area. Record length and width in feet, or diameter for a round sandbox.
  2. Pick your fill depth. Use 12 inches for a standard sandbox or 9 inches for a play area under equipment, or enter a custom depth.
  3. Choose a sand type. Washed bagged play sand (2,650 lb/yd³) and bulk play sand (2,700 lb/yd³) differ slightly in density.
  4. Add a waste allowance. The calculator adds 5% by default to cover spillage and first-season settling.
  5. Compare bags vs. bulk. Check the cost of 50 lb bags against a bulk delivery to see which is cheaper for your quantity.

Worked example

The calculator’s default scenario is a 6×6 ft sandbox filled 12 inches deep with washed play sand.

  • Area6 ft × 6 ft = 36 sq ft
  • Depth in feet12 ÷ 12 = 1.00 ft
  • Volume36 × 1.00 = 36 cu ft
  • Cubic yards36 ÷ 27 = 1.33 yd³
  • MaterialWashed play sand at 2,650 lb/yd³
  • Tons before waste1.33 × 2,650 ÷ 2,000 = 1.77 tons
  • Order with 5% waste1.77 × 1.05 = 1.86 tons (about 75 bags at 50 lb)

Bags or bulk delivery?

At $6.50 a bag (50 lb each), bagged play sand runs about $260 per ton equivalent, versus roughly $95 per ton plus a $75 delivery fee in bulk. The two cost the same at about 0.45 tons (around 18 bags) — below that, bags are cheaper; above it, bulk delivery wins even after the flat delivery fee.

  • Small (under 0.5 tons)A 4×4 ft toddler box — buy 8–18 bags, no delivery minimum, easy to store any leftover.
  • Medium (0.5–2 tons)A standard 6×6 or 8×8 ft sandbox — bulk is usually cheaper past ~18 bags, but confirm the supplier’s delivery minimum first.
  • Large (2+ tons)Group play areas or multiple boxes — bulk delivery only; bagging that much sand isn’t practical or cost-effective.

Common mistakes

  • Using unwashed sand instead of play sand.Construction or fill sand can contain silt, clay dust, or sharp particles that aren’t safety-rated for children.
  • Skipping a base fabric or liner.Without a weed barrier, sand mixes into the underlying soil and disappears within a season.
  • Underestimating compaction.Loose sand settles 10–15% after the first rain and use; budget for a top-up rather than a one-time fill.
  • No edging or frame to contain the sand.Sand migrates onto the lawn or walkway without a border to hold it in place.
  • Ordering by volume instead of weight.Suppliers sell sand in tons, so mismatching the cubic-yard-to-ton conversion leads to a short order.
  • Ignoring drainage.A sandbox without drainage holes or a gravel sub-base holds water, turning sand to mud and inviting mold.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • Density is assumed at 2,650 lb per cubic yard for washed bagged sand, 2,700 lb/yd³ for bulk.
  • Depth entered is the compacted, finished depth, not the loose poured depth.
  • A 5% waste factor is added for spillage and settling; increase it for uneven ground.
  • Bags are assumed to be 50 lb each.
  • The calculator assumes a level base, not a sloped or curved one.
  • Area is the play surface footprint only, not a surrounding path or border.

Common questions

How deep should play sand be in a sandbox?

12 inches is standard for a digging sandbox; 9 inches is typical for a play area under low equipment.

How many bags of play sand do I need for a 6×6 ft sandbox?

About 75 bags at 50 lb each, filled 12 inches deep with a 5% waste allowance.

Can I use regular sand instead of play sand?

No. Regular or mason sand isn’t screened for dust and silica fines, which makes it a safety concern for kids.

How often should I replace or top up play sand?

Top up 2–3 inches every year or two as sand compacts and scatters; fully replace every 5–7 years.

Does play sand need a liner underneath?

Landscape fabric is recommended to stop weeds and keep sand from disappearing into the soil; avoid solid plastic, which traps water.

Is bulk play sand the same quality as bagged?

Both are fine, washed, screened sand. Bulk is usually cheaper per ton — confirm it’s certified dust-free and low in crystalline silica.

How much does a ton of play sand cover?

About 20 sq ft at a 12-inch depth, or about 27 sq ft at a 9-inch depth.

Should I use bulk delivery or bags for a large sandbox?

Above about 0.45 tons (roughly 18 bags), bulk delivery is cheaper, as long as the supplier’s delivery minimum is met.

Will play sand get moldy or need drainage?

Yes, if it stays waterlogged. Ensure the box has drain holes or a gravel sub-base, and cover it when not in use.

What's the difference between play sand and paver or mason sand?

Play sand is finer, washed, and dust-free for skin-safe contact. Mason and paver sand are coarser and meant for construction, not play.
