- Deduct any openings. Subtract the area of steps, drainage gaps, or utility cutouts.
- Add waste. Multiply net area by 1 plus your waste percentage — 8% is typical for straight retaining walls with corners.

Common mistakes
- Not counting the buried base course.Retaining walls typically bury the bottom course 4-6in below grade — that course isn’t visible height but still needs blocks.
