How to calculate how many retaining wall blocks you need

blocks = ( wall length × wall height − opening area ) × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per block
  1. Measure the wall face. Multiply the wall’s total length by its finished height in feet.
  2. Deduct any openings. Subtract the area of steps, drainage gaps, or utility cutouts.
  3. Add waste. Multiply net area by 1 plus your waste percentage — 8% is typical for straight retaining walls with corners.

Common mistakes

  • Not counting the buried base course.Retaining walls typically bury the bottom course 4-6in below grade — that course isn’t visible height but still needs blocks.
