How to calculate hot mix asphalt you need

tons = ( area sq ft × depth in ÷ 12 ÷ 27 ) × (1 + waste%) × density lb/yd³ ÷ 2000
  1. Measure the area length × width in feet for a rectangular pad, or radius² × π for a circular one.
  2. Set the compacted depth 2in for a driveway topcoat, 3in for a base course, 4in for road paving.
  3. Convert to cubic yards multiply area by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27.
  4. Add waste add about 8% for compaction, tack coat overlap, and trimming at the edges.
  5. Convert to tons multiply cubic yards by the mix’s density (about 3,700-3,950 lb/yd³) and divide by 2,000.

Worked example

Using the calculator’s default 40 ft × 12 ft driveway topcoat at 2 inches deep with hot mix asphalt:

Bags or bulk delivery?

Bagged asphalt is cold mix, meant for patching potholes and small repairs at ambient temperature — it isn’t a substitute for hot mix on a full paving job. Hot mix must be delivered by the truckload while still hot and compacted immediately with a roller, so anything beyond a patch is a bulk-order, contractor job.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing loose and compacted depthhot mix is delivered loose and compacts under the roller, so ordering by the finished compacted depth (as this calculator does) is correct — not the loose truck-bed depth.
  • Skipping the base courseasphalt topcoat placed directly on ungraded subgrade will crack and rut — a compacted gravel base is required underneath.
