The calculator divides your deck’s run length by the on-center spacing, rounds up, and adds one joist to close out the end of the run, since a joist run needs a joist at both the start and the finish, not just spaced fillers in between.

How to calculate deck joist count

Joists = ROUNDUP(Deck run / on-center spacing) + 1
  1. Measure the run of your deck frame in feet, the direction the joists will span.
  2. Choose an on-center spacing based on your decking material’s span rating.
  3. Divide the run by the spacing in feet and round up to a whole joist.
  4. Add one joist to close out the far end of the run.

A 12 ft deck run with joists spaced 16 in on-center works out like this:

Sizing the Beam Under Your Joists

This calculator sizes joists, but the beam underneath them is a separate calculation. As a rough planning guide, a doubled 2×8 beam spans about 6 ft between support posts for a typical single-level residential deck, a doubled 2×10 spans about 7 to 8 ft, and a doubled 2×12 spans about 8 to 10 ft. Wider joist spacing and longer joist spans both increase the load the beam has to carry, so these numbers shrink on a deck with long joist spans.

Common mistakes

  • Using rafter spacing instead of decking span ratingjoist spacing should match your decking product’s rated span, not a generic 16 in default.
  • Forgetting doubled joistsjoists under hot tubs, parallel to a ledger, or framing a stair opening usually need to be doubled up, which this count doesn’t add automatically.
  • Ignoring joist crown directionevery joist has a slight bow, or crown, and should be installed crown-up, which doesn’t change the count but matters for a flat deck surface.
