Start with the total length of eave you’re covering (a perimeter measurement for a full roofline, or a straight run for one side), then add a waste percentage for seams, corners, and end caps. Divide that adjusted length by the section length (10 ft) to get sections, rounding up. Hangers are calculated from the same adjusted length divided by your hanger spacing, since hangers are the main thing holding the gutter to the fascia. Multiply sections and hangers by their unit prices and add them together for the total.

How to calculate gutter and downspout materials

Sections = (Eave length × (1 + waste%)) / 10 ft; Hangers = Eave length with waste / hanger spacing
  1. Measure the total eave length you’re guttering, in a straight run or full perimeter.
  2. Add waste 5% is typical to cover end caps, corners, and seams.
  3. Divide by 10 ft gutter sections are sold in 10 ft lengths, so round up.
  4. Calculate hangers divide the adjusted length by your hanger spacing, commonly every 24-36 in.
  5. Add downspouts separately this calculator totals gutter and hangers only, so price downspouts and elbows on top.

Downspouts and Gutter Slope

This calculator totals gutter sections and hangers, but downspouts are priced separately. A common rule of thumb is one downspout for every 35-40 ft of gutter run, or roughly every 600-750 sq ft of roof area, so a 200 ft roofline like the example above would typically need 5-6 downspouts split across the perimeter.

Gutters also need slope to drain, not just to be level. Standard practice is about 1/4 in of drop for every 10 ft of run toward the downspout. On long runs, gutters are often sloped from the center toward downspouts at both ends instead of one continuous slope.
