Start with the gross area of the wall or ceiling, subtract the square footage of windows, doors, and other openings that won’t get insulated, then add your waste percentage for cutting around framing and utility boxes. Divide that net area by the coverage per pack for the batt size and R-value you’re using (commonly around 40 sq ft per 10-pack of standard 15 in wide batts) and round up to the next whole pack.

How to calculate how many insulation batts you need
- Measure the wall length and height, or the attic floor area, to get gross square footage.
- Subtract the square footage of windows, doors, and other unfinished openings.
- Pick your R-value and batt size to match your cavity depth.
- Add waste for cutting around outlets, wiring, and framing.
- Divide net area by coverage per pack, and round up to whole packs.

Batts are sold in packages, not individual pieces, so round your package count up before you check out. Buy from the same production lot if possible so R-value and facing color match across the whole job, and store unused packages flat and dry until you’re ready to install them.
