Tile Grout Calculator: Bags Needed by Joint Width

Tile Grout Calculator

Grout coverage depends heavily on tile size and joint width, so guessing usually means a second trip to the store. Enter your floor area and pick your tile size and joint width to get a bag count.

Material profile

Grout coverage per bag drops as tile gets smaller or joints get wider, because more grout goes into more linear feet of joint per square foot of floor. Take your tile area, add a waste percentage for spillage and mixing, then divide by the coverage rating for your specific tile size and joint width combination. Round up to the next full bag.

Grout Types by Joint Width

Joint width determines whether you need sanded or unsanded grout.

How to calculate how many grout bags you need

Bags = (Tile area × (1 + Waste%)) / Coverage per bag, based on tile size and joint width
  1. Measure the total square footage of the tiled area.
  2. Add waste around 10% to cover mixing loss and spillage.
  3. Match your tile size and joint width to the closest coverage rating, since both change coverage per bag.
  4. Divide the adjusted area by the coverage per bag, then round up to a full bag.

Worked example

Here’s the math for a 120 sq ft floor using 12×12 in tile with 3/16 in joints.

  • Tile area120 sq ft
  • Waste added10%
  • Tile and joint size12×12 in tile, 3/16 in joint
  • Coverage per bag70 sq ft
  • Bags needed2 bags
  • Grout float and sponge kit1 kit
  • Grout cost$32.00 (2 x $16.00)
  • Total material cost$32.00

Ordering tile grout

Grout bags are cheap compared to the cost of a mid-project store run, so it pays to round up rather than cut it close. Keep the box or a photo of the label since you may need to match color and lot for future repairs.

  • Buy one extra bagfor touch-ups, corner repairs, and to account for uneven mixing near the end of the job.
  • Match grout to joint widthsanded for 1/8 in and wider, unsanded for tighter joints and delicate tile faces.
  • Keep leftover grout sealed and dryin a labeled bag or bucket in case you need to patch a joint later.
  • Plan your sealing schedulecementitious grout usually needs 48-72 hours to cure before sealing, so budget that time into your project.

Common mistakes

  • Guessing coverage instead of checking joint widthCoverage per bag can vary by more than 40% between a 1/8 in joint and a 3/16 in joint on the same tile size.
  • Not accounting for tile sizeSmaller tile has more linear feet of joint per square foot, so a small-format tile job needs noticeably more grout than the same area in large-format tile.
  • Skipping the waste factorMixing grout in small batches wastes material at the bottom of the bucket, and spillage during application adds up.
  • Using the wrong grout typeSanded grout in tight joints or unsanded grout in wide joints can affect durability and finish quality.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • Coverage figures are based on standard grout joint depth matching typical tile thickness.
  • Waste percentage covers mixing loss and spillage during application.
  • Bag coverage assumes the tile size and joint width selected in the calculator.
  • Grout float and sponge kit quantity is a general recommendation, not calculated from area.

Common questions

How much grout waste should I add?

10% is a reasonable default to cover mixing loss and spillage on most jobs.

Does tile size really change how much grout I need?

Yes. Smaller tiles have more joint length per square foot of floor, so a 6×6 in tile job can need nearly double the grout of the same area in 12×24 in tile.

Sanded or unsanded grout, which do I need?

Use sanded grout for joints 1/8 in and wider, and unsanded for joints under 1/8 in or for polished and glass tile that sand could scratch.

How long before I can walk on grouted tile?

Most grout is ready for light foot traffic in 24 hours and reaches full cure in about a week, but check the specific product’s instructions.

Should I seal grout after it cures?

Cementitious (sanded and unsanded) grout should be sealed after it fully cures, typically 48-72 hours, to resist staining.
