How to calculate baseboard trim
- Measure each wall in the room and add them together for the total perimeter.
- Add waste 10% is standard, to cover corner miters and mismeasured cuts.
- Pick a board length: 8, 12, or 16 ft, longer boards mean fewer seams.
- Divide the adjusted perimeter by the board length and round up to a full board.

Do You Need to Subtract Door Openings?
This calculator uses the room’s full perimeter, which already builds in a cushion for door and closet openings since most rooms lose only a few linear feet to doorways. For a typical bedroom or living room with one or two standard doors, the waste allowance covers the difference and you don’t need to subtract anything. For a room with several wide openings, like an open-concept living/dining area or a hallway with multiple doors, measure the actual wall runs that get baseboard instead of the full perimeter, and drop the waste allowance down to around 5% since you’re already measuring net wall length.
Common mistakes
- Using full perimeter for rooms with lots of openingsopen floor plans and hallways with multiple doorways need net wall measurements, not a raw room perimeter.
- Forgetting quarter round or shoe moldingthat’s a separate trim piece sold and measured the same way, but it’s not included in this baseboard count.
- Buying only exact-length boardsevery outside and inside corner loses some length to a mitered cut, which is what the waste allowance covers.
- Mixing board lengths without planning seamsfewer, longer boards mean fewer seams on long walls, but they’re harder to maneuver into tight rooms and hallways.

- A single waste percentage covers miter cuts, corners, and material loss.
- Boards are bought whole, not cut down from a longer stock length outside the options given.
- Quarter round, shoe molding, and corner blocks are not included in this count.
- Door and window openings are not automatically subtracted from the perimeter.
Common questions
Should I subtract doorways from the room perimeter?
Not usually. The default waste allowance covers typical door openings. For rooms with several wide openings, measure net wall length instead.
What board length should I choose?
Pick the longest length that’s practical to carry into the room. Longer boards mean fewer seams on long, unbroken walls.
Does this include quarter round or shoe molding?
No, that’s priced and measured separately since it’s a different trim profile installed at the floor line.
How much waste should I add for baseboard?
10% is standard for a typical rectangular room. Rooms with lots of corners or angles can run higher.
Can I use this for crown molding too?
Yes, the same perimeter-and-waste approach works for crown molding. Just measure at ceiling height and pick your board length.
