- Launching apronExtra riprap placed flat at the toe, thicker than the standard slope, designed to intentionally slide into any scour hole that forms and self-armor the new, lower surface.
- PipingSoil migrating out through the gaps in a riprap layer due to water flow, gradually hollowing out the ground beneath — the main reason filter fabric is used.
- WinnowingA toe-specific form of piping, where soil is sucked out from beneath the toe apron through the voids between stones, even while the stones themselves stay in place.

- Specific gravityA measure of stone density relative to water — quality riprap should generally sit at 2.5 or higher, with lower numbers suggesting weaker material.
- Placed (bulk) densityThe real-world weight of riprap as it sits on the ground, including the voids between stones — always lower than the density of the solid rock itself.
- Ton vs. cubic yardRiprap is sold and delivered by weight (tons), while project planning often starts in volume (cubic yards or square footage) — converting between them requires the material’s placed density.
