Standard concrete weighs about 150 lb per cubic foot, which works out to 4,050 lb per cubic yard or roughly 2 tons. The weight comes from density, and density shifts a little with the mix: reinforced concrete is denser at 156 lb/ft³, asphalt concrete lighter at 140, and structural lightweight concrete as low as 115. To get a weight, multiply your volume by the right density.
The formula
That’s the whole calculation — the only trick is keeping the units consistent. If your volume is in cubic feet, use a density in lb/ft³. For a slab, work out the volume first: length × width × thickness, with thickness converted from inches to feet by dividing by 12.
Example: a 10 × 10 ft slab at 4 inches is 33.3 cubic feet. At 150 lb/ft³ that’s 5,000 lb — two and a half tons sitting on your subgrade.

Why weight matters
- HaulingA half-ton pickup carries roughly one cubic yard of wet concrete — and that’s already at its limit. Two tons is a lot of truck.
- SubgradeThe ground under a slab has to carry its weight without settling. A 400 sq ft patio at 4 inches is about 10,000 lb resting on the base you prepared.
- DisposalBreaking out an old slab? Dumpsters are rated by weight, not volume. Broken concrete weighs about half of solid — roughly 2,025 lb per loose cubic yard.
- Structural loadOn an upper floor or a deck, the dead weight of the concrete itself is part of the load the structure must carry.

How much does an 80 lb bag of concrete weigh mixed?
An 80 lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet, which at 150 lb/ft³ weighs about 90 lb once you add the mixing water.
