Stone veneer is ordered in two parts. Flats cover the face of the wall and are sold by the square foot; corners wrap outside 90° edges and are sold by the linear foot. Find your wall area, subtract openings, then subtract the flat area the corners will cover — about 0.75 ft² for every linear foot of corner — and add 10% waste. Order flats and corners separately.

Flats vs corners — why you order two things

Manufactured and natural thin stone veneer both come in two shapes. Flat pieces have a flat back and cover the open face of a wall. Corner pieces are L-shaped, with a long face and a short return, so they wrap an outside corner with no cut edge showing — which is what makes the finished job look like solid stone rather than a thin skin.

Because they’re different shapes, they’re sold in different units: flats by the square foot, corners by the linear foot of corner height. You measure and buy them separately, and the two never substitute for each other.

How the calculation works

flats = ( wall area − openings − corners×0.75 ) × (1 + waste) corners = corner linear ft × (1 + waste)
  1. Measure the flat area. Length × height of every wall face, added together. Include the whole surface for now — you’ll subtract the gaps next.
  2. Subtract openings. Windows, doors, vents, the firebox — anything that won’t be covered.
  3. Measure the outside corners. Add up the height of every outside 90° corner in linear feet. Inside corners don’t get corner pieces — flats just butt together there.
  4. Subtract the corner overlap. Each linear foot of corner also covers roughly 0.75 ft² of the flat wall with its return. Subtract corner_lf × 0.75 from the flats so you don’t buy that area twice.
  5. Add waste. 10% for a standard job, 15% if you’re cutting your own corners or have lots of openings.

Worked example: a 20 × 10 ft wall

One wall, 20 ft wide by 10 ft tall, with a 3 × 5 ft window and a 10-ft outside corner, at 10% waste.

  • Gross wall area (20 × 10)200 sq ft
  • Less window (3 × 5)−15 sq ft
  • Less corner overlap (10 lf × 0.75)−7.5 sq ft
  • Net flat area177.5 sq ft
  • Flats to order (+10%)≈ 195 sq ft
  • Corners to order (10 lf +10%)≈ 11 linear ft

So you’d buy about 195 square feet of flats and 11 linear feet of corners — two separate line items on the order.

Coverage assumptions this tool uses

  • Corner factor 0.75 ft² per linear footThe industry-average return coverage. Small profiles consume nearer 0.5; large, chunky profiles nearer 1.0. Change it in the tool to match your product.
  • 10% waste defaultStandard allowance for cuts and breakage. Bump to 15% for fireplaces, gables, or many openings.
  • Inside corners are flat areaOnly outside corners need corner pieces. Inside corners are measured as part of the wall.
  • Box coverage is set by your productFlat boxes commonly cover ~10 ft², corner boxes ~6 linear ft — but always read your carton. The tool lets you enter both.

Common estimating mistakes

  • Ordering flats for the corner area tooThe corner return covers part of the flat wall. Skip the 0.75 ft²/lf deduction and you over-order flats every time.
  • Buying corners by the square footCorners are sold by the linear foot of corner height. Mixing the units throws the whole order off.
  • Counting inside corners as corner piecesOnly outside corners need them. Inside corners are flats butted together — count them in the wall area.
  • Skipping the waste factorStone breaks and needs cutting. Running short means a reorder, and a new dye lot rarely matches the first.
  • Forgetting to subtract openingsWindows and doors can be a big share of a wall. Not deducting them means paying for stone you’ll never install.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate stone veneer?

Measure each wall’s length × height, subtract openings, then subtract about 0.75 ft² per linear foot of corner. Add 10% waste. Order flats by the square foot and corners by the linear foot.

What is the difference between flats and corners?

Flats cover the flat face of a wall and are sold by the square foot. Corners are L-shaped pieces that wrap outside 90° edges and are sold by the linear foot. You order the two separately.

Do corners reduce the amount of flats I need?

Yes. Each corner piece’s return covers part of the flat wall — roughly 0.75 ft² per linear foot — so you subtract that from your flat total to avoid double-ordering.

How much waste should I add for stone veneer?

About 10% for a standard job, 15% if you’re cutting your own corners or have many openings and custom cuts. Coming up short risks a dye-lot mismatch on the reorder.

Do I measure inside corners?

No. Only outside corners need corner pieces. At an inside corner the flats simply butt together, so include inside corners in the flat wall area instead.

How many boxes of stone veneer do I need?

Divide flat square footage by the flat box coverage (often ~10 ft²) and corner linear footage by the corner box coverage (often ~6 lf), then round each up. Confirm the coverage on your specific product.
