How to calculate soil for a raised bed

A raised bed is a simple rectangular or circular volume, split by your mix ratio.

  1. Find the bed’s volume. Length × width × depth for a rectangle, or π × radius² × depth for a circle, all in feet.
  2. Subtract a filler base if used. A hugelkultur-style base of logs or branches reduces the soil fill depth.
  3. Add a settling allowance. 5–10% covers soil compacting down after watering.
  4. Split by mix ratio. Multiply the total by each component’s percentage – topsoil, compost, aeration material.
  5. Divide by bag size and round up, or convert to cubic yards for a bulk order.
