Material profile

For the default ring with a 6 ft trunk gap and a 2 ft mulch band, spread 3 inches deep, you’ll need about 0.65 cubic yards (17.6 cubic feet) of hardwood bark mulch, which comes to roughly 36 bags of 0.5 cu ft mulch, or about 0.25 tons if ordered in bulk.

Mulch needed by tree ring size

These estimates use hardwood bark mulch at 500 lb per cubic yard with a 10% waste allowance for uneven spreading. The ring area is the outer circle minus the inner trunk gap.

How to calculate mulch you need

yd³ = ( π × (outer dia/2)² − π × (inner dia/2)² ) × (depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × (1 + waste %)
  1. Measure the trunk gap the diameter of bare space left immediately around the trunk, so mulch never touches bark directly.
  2. Set the mulch band width how far the ring extends outward from the trunk gap — commonly 1.5-3 ft, matching or exceeding the drip line for young trees.
  3. Set the mulch depth 2-4 inches is standard; avoid piling mulch deeper, which can suffocate roots and invite rot.
  4. Calculate the ring area subtract the inner trunk-gap circle’s area from the outer ring circle’s area to get the true donut-shaped footprint.
  5. Convert to cubic yards and add waste multiply ring area by depth in feet, divide by 27, then add about 10% for uneven spreading and settling.

Worked example

Using the calculator’s default 6 ft trunk gap with a 2 ft mulch band (10 ft outer diameter), spread 3 inches deep with hardwood bark mulch:

  • Outer circle areaπ × (10÷2)² = 78.54 sq ft
  • Inner (trunk gap) circle areaπ × (6÷2)² = 28.27 sq ft
  • Ring area78.54 − 28.27 ≈ 64 sq ft
  • Depth in feet3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  • Volume before waste64 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 16 cu ft
  • Plus 10% waste16 × 1.10 = 17.6 cu ft
  • Cubic yards17.6 ÷ 27 = 0.65 yd³
  • Weight & order amount0.65 × 500 = 325.9 lb ≈ 0.163 tons → order 0.25 tons, or 36 bags (0.5 cu ft each)

Bags or bulk delivery?

A single tree ring is usually cheapest filled with bagged mulch from a garden center, unless you’re mulching several trees at once, in which case bulk delivery by the cubic yard becomes more economical despite the delivery fee.

  • Small repairsunder 0.5 ton (about 20 bags) — one or two tree rings; bagged mulch is simplest and avoids a delivery minimum.
  • Medium jobs0.5 to 3 tons — mulching a row of street trees or several mature trees; compare bulk price plus delivery against bag totals.
  • Large jobsover 3 tons — an orchard, park, or many trees across a property; bulk delivery is reliably cheaper per cubic yard.

Common mistakes

  • Piling mulch against the trunk ("mulch volcano")mulch touching the bark traps moisture, invites rot and pests, and can girdle roots over time — always leave a gap around the trunk.
  • Making the ring too smalla mulch ring that only covers the trunk area does little for the tree; extending it toward the drip line protects more of the root zone and keeps mowers away.
  • Piling mulch too deepmore than 3-4 inches can suffocate roots and hold excess moisture — depth matters more than most people think.
  • Using the wrong mulch type near termite-prone areaswood mulch directly against a structure’s foundation can attract termites; keep wood mulch rings well away from buildings, or use an inorganic alternative near foundations.
  • Forgetting the ring is a donut, not a full circlecalculating mulch by the full outer circle area (ignoring the trunk gap) over-orders material — always subtract the inner circle.
  • Not refreshing mulch annuallyorganic mulch breaks down and thins over a year or two; plan to top off the ring depth annually rather than letting it disappear.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • The ring area is calculated as the outer circle minus the inner trunk-gap circle (a donut shape), not a full circle.
  • Trunk gap should leave mulch pulled back from the bark to prevent rot and pest issues.
  • 10% waste covers uneven spreading, settling, and material that misses the ring during placement.
  • Density assumes standard hardwood bark mulch; cedar and wood chips are similar but slightly lighter per cubic yard.
  • Prices are material only; delivery fee applies once per order, not per tree, if mulching several trees in one delivery.
  • Depth should be refreshed annually as organic mulch breaks down and settles.

Common questions

How much mulch do I need for a ring around a tree?

Subtract the inner trunk-gap circle’s area from the outer ring circle’s area, multiply by depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 10 ft outer ring with a 6 ft trunk gap at 3 inches deep needs about 0.65 cubic yards.

How big should a mulch ring be around a tree?

Extend it toward the tree’s drip line where possible — commonly a 2-3 ft wide band beyond the trunk gap for young to medium trees, wider for mature shade trees.

How deep should mulch be around a tree?

2-4 inches is standard. More than 4 inches, especially piled against the trunk, can suffocate roots and invite rot — avoid the classic “mulch volcano” look.

Should mulch touch the tree trunk?

No — always leave a 2-4 inch gap of bare soil right at the trunk. Mulch against the bark traps moisture and invites decay and pests.

How many bags of mulch do I need for one tree?

For the default ring (6 ft trunk gap, 2 ft band, 3 in deep), about 36 bags of 0.5 cu ft mulch.

What's the best mulch for tree rings?

Hardwood bark and cedar mulch are both popular — cedar has some natural pest-resistant properties, while arborist wood chips (often free from local tree services) give a more natural look.

How often should I re-mulch a tree ring?

About once a year — organic mulch breaks down and thins over 12-18 months, so refreshing it maintains weed suppression and moisture retention.

Does a wider mulch ring hurt or help a mature tree?

It helps — a wider ring protects more of the root zone from mower and trimmer damage and reduces competition from turf grass roots.

How much mulch for a large shade tree, 8 ft trunk gap?

With a 3 ft mulch band at 3 inches deep, about 1.34 cubic yards, or roughly 0.34 tons — see the reference table above.

Can I use rubber mulch around a tree instead of wood mulch?

It’s not recommended — wood mulch decomposes and feeds the soil around the tree’s roots, while rubber mulch doesn’t break down and can retain heat that stresses roots.
