How to plan a concrete basketball court

  1. Confirm your available space and pick a standard size, or measure a custom slab.
  2. Grade and compact the subgrade, then add 4–6 inches of compacted gravel base for drainage.
  3. Slope the slab slightly (about 1% or 1/8 inch per foot) so water drains to one side instead of pooling.
  4. Use control joints every 8–10 feet to control cracking as the slab cures and moves seasonally.
  5. Order ready-mix concrete for anything larger than a small pad — hand-mixing bags for a full court isn’t practical.
  6. Finish with a broom finish for traction, and cure for at least a week before light use, 28 days before heavy use.
