Deck Joist & Beam Calculator
Enter your deck’s run length and pick a joist spacing (12, 16, or 24 in on-center) to get the exact number of joists and boards to buy.
Covers curves, corners and offcuts. 5–15% is normal.

Material profile
Joist count depends on how far apart you space them, measured on-center from the middle of one joist to the middle of the next. The calculator divides your deck’s run length by the on-center spacing, rounds up, and adds one joist to close out the end of the run, since a joist run needs a joist at both the start and the finish, not just spaced fillers in between.
Joist Spacing by Decking Material
Your decking board’s span rating sets the maximum joist spacing you can use. Going wider than the rating risks bounce and long-term sagging.
| Decking Material | Max Joist Spacing (On-Center) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Composite decking (most brands) | 16 in | Some composite boards allow 12 in for diagonal installs |
| 5/4 wood decking | 16 in | Standard for pine, cedar, and most dimensional lumber |
| 2x lumber decking (laid flat) | 24 in | Thicker boards can span farther between joists |
| Diagonal or picture-frame patterns | 12 in | Tighter spacing needed to support angled cuts |
How to calculate deck joist count
- Measure the run of your deck frame in feet, the direction the joists will span.
- Choose an on-center spacing based on your decking material’s span rating.
- Divide the run by the spacing in feet and round up to a whole joist.
- Add one joist to close out the far end of the run.
Worked example
A 12 ft deck run with joists spaced 16 in on-center works out like this:
- Deck run12 ft
- Joist spacing16 in on-center
- Waste allowance0%
- Joists needed10 joists
- Cost per joist$32.00
- Total joist cost$320.00
Sizing the Beam Under Your Joists
This calculator sizes joists, but the beam underneath them is a separate calculation. As a rough planning guide, a doubled 2×8 beam spans about 6 ft between support posts for a typical single-level residential deck, a doubled 2×10 spans about 7 to 8 ft, and a doubled 2×12 spans about 8 to 10 ft. Wider joist spacing and longer joist spans both increase the load the beam has to carry, so these numbers shrink on a deck with long joist spans.
- Doubled 2×8 beam: roughly 6 ft max span between posts
- Doubled 2×10 beam: roughly 7 to 8 ft max span between posts
- Doubled 2×12 beam: roughly 8 to 10 ft max span between posts
These are general planning figures, not an engineered span table. Always confirm against your local building code or IRC span tables before cutting lumber.
Common mistakes
- Using rafter spacing instead of decking span ratingjoist spacing should match your decking product’s rated span, not a generic 16 in default.
- Forgetting doubled joistsjoists under hot tubs, parallel to a ledger, or framing a stair opening usually need to be doubled up, which this count doesn’t add automatically.
- Ignoring joist crown directionevery joist has a slight bow, or crown, and should be installed crown-up, which doesn’t change the count but matters for a flat deck surface.
- Sizing the beam the same as the joiststhe beam carries a much bigger load than any single joist and needs its own span check, not just a matching lumber size.
What this calculator assumes
Adjust your result if your project differs from these.
- The deck run is a straight, single span with no cantilevers or multi-level framing.
- On-center spacing is constant across the entire run.
- The joist count includes a joist at both ends of the run, not just spaced fillers in between.
- Beam sizing, ledger attachment, and hardware like joist hangers and screws are not included in this count.
- Waste defaults to 0% since joist boards are typically cut to fit rather than wasted like sheet goods.
Common questions
What does on-center spacing mean?
It’s the distance measured from the center of one joist to the center of the next, not the open gap between them.
Can I use 24 in on-center for composite decking?
Most composite manufacturers cap span at 16 in on-center, and some require 12 in for diagonal patterns. Check your product’s span rating before going wider.
Do I need to double up any joists?
Yes, typically along a ledger board, around stair or hot tub openings, and under load-bearing points. Add those manually to the count from this calculator.
How is beam size different from joist spacing?
Joist spacing controls decking bounce and support along the deck surface. Beam size controls how far the joists themselves can span between support posts.
Does this calculator include hardware?
No, joist hangers, structural screws, and post bases are priced and bought separately from the joist boards.
