How to calculate joint sand you need

cubic yards = ( paver area sq ft × effective depth in ÷ 12 ) ÷ 27; tons = cubic yards × density lb/yd³ ÷ 2,000; bags = tons × 2,000 ÷ bag weight lb
  1. Measure the paver surface. Get the total length × width of the paved area in square feet — the calculation covers the whole surface, not just the joint lines.
  2. Pick your joint width. Choose narrow (1/8″), standard (1/4″) or wide (1/2″) — these map to an effective average depth spread across the full surface, not the literal joint gap.
  3. Choose your sand type. Polymeric sand locks joints and resists weeds; regular jointing sand is cheaper but can wash out; stone dust suits natural stone joints but drains poorly.
  4. Calculate volume and weight. Convert the effective depth to feet, multiply by area, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by density and divide by 2,000 for tons.
  5. Convert to bags and add waste. Divide the tons by your bag weight (commonly 50 lb), then add about 10% for sweeping loss and compaction before ordering.

A 20×15 ft paver patio (300 sq ft) with standard 1/4″ joints (0.28″ effective depth), filled with polymeric sand at 2,600 lb/yd³, with a 10% waste allowance.

Bags or bulk delivery?

Joint sand is almost always bought by the bag, not delivered in bulk. A 50 lb bag of polymeric sand covers roughly 16–33 sq ft depending on joint width — more for narrow joints, less for wide ones — so most single-patio jobs land in the 5–20 bag range. What's the difference between polymeric and regular jointing sand?

Polymeric sand contains a binder that hardens when activated with water, locking joints in place and resisting weeds and ants. Regular sand has no binder and can wash out over time.

How much area does one bag of polymeric sand cover?

How wide should paver joints be?
