How to calculate polymeric sand you need
- Measure your paver area. length × width in feet for a rectangular patio or driveway, or radius² × π for a circular one.
- Identify your joint width profile. Narrow joints (up to 1/8in) need the least sand per square foot; wide joints (3/8-1in) for natural stone need the most.
- Scale the coverage rate to your area. Divide your paver area by 1,000, then multiply by the rate per 1,000 sq ft for your joint width to get raw pounds needed.
- Add waste for sweeping loss. Multiply by 1 plus your waste percentage — 10% covers sand lost during sweeping, compacting, and cleanup.
- Round up to full bags. Divide total pounds by the bag size and round up — you can’t buy a partial bag.
