Measuring Ridges and Hips Correctly
A gable roof has just one ridge line, so measuring is simple: walk the peak and record the length. A hip roof adds hip lines running from the peak down to each corner, and those all count toward your total too, since ridge cap covers hips the same way it covers the ridge. Walk the roof plan, or check your original truss drawings, and add every ridge segment and every hip segment together before you plug in a total length. Complex roofs with lots of hips, valleys, and dormers eat more waste than a simple gable, so bump your waste allowance to 12 to 15% on anything with more than a couple of hip lines.
