Start with the total rise, the vertical distance from the landing surface to the deck. Divide that by your target riser height and round to the nearest whole number to get the step count. Then divide the total rise by that step count again to get the actual, even riser height for every step. Treads equal one fewer than the step count since the top step is the deck surface itself. Multiply treads by tread depth for total run, then use the Pythagorean theorem on total rise and total run to get the diagonal stringer length.

- Measure total rise from the finished landing pad or ground up to the top of the decking surface.
- Pick a target riser around 7.25-7.5 in is comfortable and code-compliant for most residential stairs.
- Calculate step count divide total rise by target riser and round to the nearest whole step.
- Recheck the actual riser divide total rise by the rounded step count so every riser comes out equal.
- Find stringer length multiply treads by tread depth for total run, then solve the diagonal with total rise and total run.

How Many Stringers Does Your Stair Width Need?
Tread lumber (usually 5/4 decking or 2x lumber) can only span so far unsupported before it flexes underfoot. Most builders keep stringer spacing at 16 in on-center, with a maximum of 18 in on-center allowed by code for standard 2x tread stock. For a 36 in wide stair, that works out to 3 stringers minimum by spacing math, but most contractors add a 4th stringer on wide or heavily-used stairs for stiffness and to support tread ends near the stringer notches, especially with composite decking which flexes more than lumber. Wider stairs (48 in+) need 4-5 stringers depending on tread material.
