Gutter & Downspout Calculator
Gutters are sold in 10 ft sections but priced and installed by the linear foot of roofline. This calculator turns your eave measurements into sections, hangers, and total material cost for K-style aluminum or half-round copper.
Covers curves, corners and offcuts. 5–15% is normal.

Coverage & waste
Material profile
Start with the total length of eave you’re covering (a perimeter measurement for a full roofline, or a straight run for one side), then add a waste percentage for seams, corners, and end caps. Divide that adjusted length by the section length (10 ft) to get sections, rounding up. Hangers are calculated from the same adjusted length divided by your hanger spacing, since hangers are the main thing holding the gutter to the fascia. Multiply sections and hangers by their unit prices and add them together for the total.
Choosing a Gutter Size
Gutter size should match how much roof area drains into it, not just personal preference. Use this as a starting point, then check local rainfall intensity for your area.
| Gutter Profile | Typical Max Roof Area | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 5 in K-style aluminum | Up to ~7,500 sq ft with one downspout per run | Standard residential roofs |
| 6 in K-style aluminum | Above ~7,500 sq ft or high-intensity rainfall areas | Larger roofs, steep pitches, heavy rain regions |
| Half-round copper | Similar to 5-6 in K-style, sized by diameter | Historic or high-end homes prioritizing appearance |
How to calculate gutter and downspout materials
- Measure the total eave length you’re guttering, in a straight run or full perimeter.
- Add waste 5% is typical to cover end caps, corners, and seams.
- Divide by 10 ft gutter sections are sold in 10 ft lengths, so round up.
- Calculate hangers divide the adjusted length by your hanger spacing, commonly every 24-36 in.
- Add downspouts separately this calculator totals gutter and hangers only, so price downspouts and elbows on top.
Worked example
Here’s the math for a 60 x 40 ft roofline (200 ft perimeter) using 5 in K-style aluminum with 5% waste.
- Roofline60 x 40 ft rectangle (200 ft perimeter)
- Length with 5% waste210.0 ft
- Sections needed (10 ft each)21 sections
- Hangers needed (2.5 ft spacing)85 hangers
- Section cost (21 × $28)$588
- Hanger cost (85 × $3)$255
- Total material cost$843
Downspouts and Gutter Slope
This calculator totals gutter sections and hangers, but downspouts are priced separately. A common rule of thumb is one downspout for every 35-40 ft of gutter run, or roughly every 600-750 sq ft of roof area, so a 200 ft roofline like the example above would typically need 5-6 downspouts split across the perimeter.
Gutters also need slope to drain, not just to be level. Standard practice is about 1/4 in of drop for every 10 ft of run toward the downspout. On long runs, gutters are often sloped from the center toward downspouts at both ends instead of one continuous slope.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting downspouts in the total budgetthis calculator covers sections and hangers only, so add downspouts, elbows, and extensions separately.
- Using standard hanger spacing in heavy snow areastighten hanger spacing to around 24 in on-center where snow and ice load is a concern, instead of the standard 30-36 in.
- Installing gutters dead levelwithout slope toward the downspouts, water pools and overflows even if every other measurement is right.
- Undersizing gutters for a steep or large roofa 5 in gutter that’s fine on a small ranch roof can overflow on a steep, large roof; step up to 6 in when in doubt.
What this calculator assumes
Adjust your result if your project differs from these.
- The entered length or perimeter is the total eave you’re covering, including corners.
- Gutters are sold in 10 ft sections regardless of profile.
- Hangers are spaced evenly at the spacing you enter along the full run.
- Waste percentage covers seams, end caps, and corner pieces, not downspouts.
- Downspouts, elbows, and outlets are priced separately and not included in the total.
Common questions
How many gutter hangers do I need per foot?
At a common 2.5 ft (30 in) spacing, expect roughly one hanger every 2.5 ft of gutter, or about 0.4 hangers per foot.
What size gutter do I need for my roof?
5 in K-style handles most standard residential roofs; step up to 6 in for larger roofs, steep pitches, or heavy rainfall areas.
How much slope does a gutter need?
About 1/4 in of drop per 10 ft of run, sloping toward the downspout.
Does this calculator include downspouts?
No. It totals gutter sections and hangers. Downspouts are typically one per 35-40 ft of run and priced separately.
