Retaining Wall Drainage Gravel Calculator

A retaining wall without a drainage zone behind it is fighting hydrostatic pressure it doesn’t need to fight. This calculator turns your wall length, zone width, and depth into cubic yards, tons, and total gravel cost.

Material profile

Multiply the drainage zone’s length by its width and depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by the gravel’s weight per cubic yard (roughly 2,600-2,700 lb for washed drainage stone) and divide by 2,000 to get tons, then add a waste percentage for compaction and voids and round up to your supplier’s order increment.

Choosing Drainage Gravel

Behind-wall drainage stone needs to be clean and free of fines so water can move through it freely instead of pooling against the wall.

Figures are for dry material. Wet or freshly delivered material can weigh noticeably more.

How to calculate drainage gravel you need

Tons = ((Length × Width × Depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27) × lb per cu yd ÷ 2000 × (1 + waste%)
  1. Measure the total length of wall you’re draining.
  2. Set zone width and depth typically 12-24 in wide and as deep as practical behind the wall face.
  3. Calculate volume length × width × depth converted to cubic feet, then cubic yards.
  4. Convert to tons multiply cubic yards by the stone’s weight per cubic yard and divide by 2,000.
  5. Add waste and round up 8% is a common allowance for compaction and voids, rounded to a full order.

Worked example

Here’s the math for a 30 ft wall with a 4 ft wide, 12 in deep drainage zone using 3/4 in clear stone and 8% waste.

  • Drainage zone footprint30 x 4 ft = 120 sq ft
  • Fill depth12 in
  • Volume129.6 cu ft = 4.8 cu yd
  • Weight per cu yd (clear stone)2,700 lb
  • Tons needed before waste6.48 tons
  • Tons to order (8% waste, rounded up)6.5 tons
  • Bagged equivalent260 bags
  • Bulk delivered cost$442.50

Bags or bulk delivery?

Bagged gravel works fine for a short garden wall or a small drainage fix, but drainage zones behind full-length retaining walls add up fast. The 30 ft wall example above already needs 260 bags at standard bag sizes, which typically costs more than double a bulk delivery for the same tonnage. Once you’re past a ton or two, get a delivered price and compare.

  • Run the tonnage numbers firstcalculate cubic yards and tons before comparing bagged and bulk pricing.
  • Ask about delivery minimumssome suppliers charge a flat delivery fee regardless of load size, which changes the bagged-vs-bulk breakeven point.
  • Keep the stone cleanwashed, fines-free stone is worth paying slightly more for since it drains far better than unwashed gravel.
  • Order a small buffer8% waste covers compaction and voids as the gravel settles into the zone.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the drain pipegravel alone doesn’t relieve hydrostatic pressure without an outlet for the water to leave through.
  • Not wrapping the zone in fabricwithout geotextile fabric, soil fines migrate into the gravel over a few seasons and clog its drainage.
  • Using gravel with fines mixed inunwashed gravel drains far worse than clean, washed stone, defeating the purpose of the drainage zone.
  • Using a generic depth on a tall walltall or engineered walls should follow the engineer’s drainage design rather than a standard rule of thumb.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • The drainage zone is treated as a simple rectangular volume (length x width x depth) running the length of the wall.
  • Depth and width stay constant along the full wall length.
  • Material weight per cubic yard is based on the stone type you select.
  • Waste percentage covers compaction and voids as the gravel settles.
  • Drain pipe, fabric, and outlet materials are priced separately and not included in the total.

Common questions

How wide should a retaining wall drainage zone be?

A common range is 12-24 in wide behind the wall face, with wider zones for taller walls or heavier water volume.

What size gravel is best for retaining wall drainage?

Clean, washed 3/4 in stone with no fines is the standard choice because it drains freely and resists clogging.

Do I need a drain pipe in addition to the gravel?

Yes. A perforated pipe at the base of the drainage zone gives water somewhere to go instead of just slowing it down.

Clear stone or pea gravel for drainage?

Clear/washed stone drains better since it has no fines. Pea gravel is a reasonable alternative when a finer look matters more.
