Sprinkler Coverage Calculator

Sprinkler head count depends on lawn area, head type, and how much overlap you build in for even watering. Enter your lawn dimensions and pick a head type, and this calculator works out head count, zones, and total cost.

Material profile

Multiply lawn length by width to get gross area, subtract any beds or hardscape that don’t need irrigation, and add an overlap allowance (10% is typical) since heads need head-to-head coverage, not just edge-to-edge, for even watering. Divide the result by one head’s coverage area, based on its throw radius, and round up to a whole head. Then group heads into zones, since a home’s water supply can only run a limited number of heads at once.

Sprinkler Head Types & Coverage

Head type should match the lawn shape and size. Never mix head types on the same zone since they apply water at different rates.

Common residential sprinkler head types and coverage
Head TypeRadius / CoverageBest For
Spray head15 ft radius / ~225 sq ftSmall lawns, tight planting beds, odd-shaped areas
MP rotator22 ft radius / ~490 sq ftWater-efficient mid-size lawns
Rotor head30 ft radius / ~900 sq ftLarge open lawn areas

How to calculate how many sprinkler heads you need

Net Area = (Length × Width) – Excluded Area; Heads = CEILING((Net Area × (1 + overlap%)) / Coverage per Head); Zones = CEILING(Heads / Heads per Zone)
  1. Measure the lawn area length by width, or break irregular shapes into rectangles and add them up.
  2. Subtract non-irrigated areas beds, patios, and hardscape that don’t need coverage.
  3. Add overlap 10% is typical, since heads need head-to-head throw for even watering, not just edge-to-edge circles.
  4. Pick a head type spray, MP rotator, or rotor, based on lawn size and shape.
  5. Divide by coverage per head round up to a whole head, then group heads into zones based on your water supply.

Worked example

Here’s a 60 ft x 40 ft lawn using spray heads (15 ft radius, 225 sq ft coverage) with 10% overlap and 6 heads per zone.

  • Lawn area (60 ft x 40 ft)2,400 sq ft gross
  • Excluded area0 sq ft
  • Net irrigated area2,400 sq ft
  • Overlap added10%
  • Head typeSpray head (15 ft radius, 225 sq ft)
  • Heads needed12 heads
  • Zones (6 heads/zone)2 zones
  • Head cost (12 x $9)$108
  • Total estimated cost$108

Planning Zones and Ordering Sprinkler Parts

Head count is only part of the system. Zones need to match your home’s water pressure and flow rate, and every zone needs its own valve and controller station on top of the heads themselves.

  • Never mix head types on one zonespray, rotor, and MP heads apply water at different rates and will over- or under-water part of the lawn if combined.
  • Size zones to your water supplymost residential systems support roughly 6-8 spray heads or 4 rotor heads per zone before pressure drops off.
  • Add a valve and controller station per zonethese are priced separately from head count and are required for every zone.
  • Keep spare heads on handbudget 2-3 extra heads and nozzles for future breaks, edging damage, or landscape changes.

Common mistakes

  • Spacing heads too far apartcoverage circles need to overlap head-to-head for even watering, not just touch at the edges.
  • Mixing head types on a zonespray, rotor, and MP heads have different precipitation rates and shouldn’t share a valve.
  • Ignoring sun and shade zonessunny and shaded areas need different run times, so they should be on separate zones even with the same head type.
  • Undersizing zone countrunning too many heads on one zone drops water pressure and leaves the farthest heads underwatered.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • Heads are spaced head-to-head, not edge-to-edge, which is why an overlap percentage is added to raw area.
  • One head type is used per zone; mixed-head systems need separate calculations per zone.
  • Lawn area is treated as open turf; complex bed cutouts beyond the excluded area field aren’t factored in.
  • Zone grouping is based on a typical residential heads-per-zone figure and may vary with your actual water pressure.

Common questions

How many sprinkler heads do I need for a 2,400 sq ft lawn?

Using 15 ft radius spray heads with 10% overlap, a 2,400 sq ft lawn needs about 12 heads split across 2 zones.

How many heads can go on one zone?

It depends on head type and your water pressure, but a common residential rule of thumb is 6-8 spray heads or 4 rotor heads per zone.

Should I use spray heads or rotors?

Spray heads suit smaller areas and tight, irregular shapes. Rotors cover much more ground per head and work better on larger open lawns.

What is an MP rotator and why use one?

It’s a multi-stream rotating nozzle that applies water more slowly and evenly than a standard rotor, which reduces runoff on slopes and clay soil.

Why add overlap to the coverage area?

Because sprinkler heads need to reach the next head over for even coverage. Without overlap, you get dry spots between heads.
