Material profile

Cap block coverage runs by linear foot, not area, since caps sit in a single row along the top of the wall. Multiply your wall’s total length by a waste percentage to cover cut pieces at corners and curves, then divide by the linear feet each cap covers (which depends on the cap’s width) to get the number of units, rounding up to whole caps.

Cap Block Size Comparison

Cap size determines how many units you need per linear foot of wall — a wider cap covers more wall length per unit.

How to Calculate Retaining Wall Cap Blocks

Caps = (Wall Length × (1 + Waste%)) / Linear Ft per Cap
  1. Measure the total length of your retaining wall in linear feet, including any curves or returns.
  2. Add a waste percentage, typically 8-10%, to cover cuts at corners, curves, and wall ends.
  3. Divide the adjusted length by the linear footage each cap covers for your chosen size.
  4. Round up to the next whole cap unit, since partial caps aren’t sold.

Worked example

For a 40 ft straight wall run using 12 in cap blocks with 8% waste:

  • Wall length40 ft
  • Waste factor8%
  • Length with waste43.2 ft
  • Cap size12 in cap block (1.0 ft per cap)
  • Caps needed44
  • Stakes needed0 (caps are adhered, not staked)
  • Estimated cost$286.00 (44 x $6.50)

Setting Caps: Adhesive, Not Stakes

Unlike edging pavers, retaining wall caps aren’t held down with landscape stakes. They’re set with a bead of exterior-grade construction adhesive rated for masonry, applied to the top course of block before the cap goes on. Let the adhesive cure per the manufacturer’s instructions before backfilling or walking on the wall.

Order a tube of adhesive for roughly every 8-10 linear feet of cap, and check that your cap size actually matches your block system’s overhang spec — most SRW systems want about a 1 in overhang on the wall face for a finished look and to shed water away from the wall.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping waste on curved wallscurves need more cut caps than a straight run, so bump waste to 12-15% on anything but a straight wall.
  • Using stakes instead of adhesivecap blocks are glued down with construction adhesive, not mechanically fastened like some edging products.
  • Mismatching cap size and block systemcaps need to match the overhang spec of your specific SRW block, not just look like the right width.
  • Forgetting corner and end capssome systems sell dedicated corner or end units separate from the standard field cap.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • Wall length is entered as a single straight linear run
  • Waste percentage covers end cuts and minor corner adjustments
  • Caps are set with construction adhesive, not stakes, matching most SRW block systems
  • Assumes one cap size is used along the entire wall length
  • Does not include the retaining wall block itself, only the cap course

Common questions

Do retaining wall caps need adhesive?

Yes. Caps are set with exterior masonry construction adhesive on top of the last block course, not staked or mortared like some other products.

How much waste should I add for a curved wall?

Straight runs typically need 8-10% waste. Curved walls need more, often 12-15%, because more caps get cut to follow the curve.

Can I mix 12 in and 16 in caps on the same wall?

It’s not recommended. Stick to one cap size for a consistent look and to keep the overhang spec uniform along the wall.

How many caps come per pallet?

It varies by manufacturer, typically 40-60 caps per pallet depending on size and material. Check with your supplier when ordering.

Does the cap overhang the wall face?

Most SRW systems spec about a 1 in overhang on the wall’s front face to shed water and give a finished edge.
