How to calculate bedding gravel you need
- Measure the length and width of the trench where the culvert pipe sits.
- Set your bedding depth, typically 4 to 6 in under the pipe.

Bags or bulk delivery?
For a short culvert run like a single driveway crossing, the total tonnage is often small enough that bagged gravel from a hardware store is competitive with delivery. Once you’re past a ton or two, bulk delivery almost always wins on price per ton, plus it saves you from hauling dozens of 50 lb bags by hand.
