How to plan and pour a pool deck

  1. Measure the full deck area you want to cover, including the space the pool itself occupies.

  3. Pick a thickness based on expected foot traffic and whether pavers or heavier equipment will sit on the deck.
  4. For anything over roughly 1 cubic yard, order ready-mix concrete by the truck instead of mixing dozens of bags by hand.
  5. Slope the deck slightly away from the pool (about 1/4 inch per foot) so water drains away instead of back into the pool.
  6. Use control joints every 8 to 12 feet to manage cracking from temperature and moisture changes.

How thick should a concrete pool deck be?

Do I need to subtract the pool itself from the deck area?
