Material profile

Bedding volume comes from the trench footprint, length times width, times the bedding depth, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards. That volume is multiplied by the material’s weight per cubic yard, adjusted for a waste allowance, to get the total tons to order.

Culvert Pipe Cover and Sizing Guide

Bedding depth is only one part of a culvert install. Minimum cover, the compacted material above the pipe, matters just as much for keeping the pipe from crushing under vehicle weight.

Bedding material weight by type

Approximate weight of one cubic yard, by type.
TypeWeight per yd³Best forDrainage
Pea gravel bedding2,600 lbStandard pipe bedding and initial backfillGood, some fines
Crushed stone bedding (3/4 in minus)2,700 lbFirmer bedding under traffic loadsModerate, compacts firm

Figures are for dry material. Wet or freshly delivered material can weigh noticeably more.

How to calculate bedding gravel you need

Tons = (Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27) × (1 + waste%) × (lb per cu yd ÷ 2000)
  1. Measure the length and width of the trench where the culvert pipe sits.
  2. Set your bedding depth, typically 4 to 6 in under the pipe.
  3. Add waste 10% is standard to cover spillage and compaction loss.
  4. Convert the volume to tons using the material’s weight per cubic yard, and round up to a full ton for ordering.

Worked example

A 22 x 3 ft culvert trench with 6 in of pea gravel bedding and 10% waste:

  • Trench size22 x 3 ft
  • Bedding depth6 in
  • Area66 sq ft
  • Waste allowance10%
  • Volume36.3 cu ft (1.34 cu yd)
  • Weight1.75 tons
  • Bagged alternative73 bags (50 lb each)
  • Bulk delivered cost$169.00

Recommended depth by project

ProjectRecommended depthNotes
Small culvert pipe (12-15 in diameter)4 to 6 in beddingMatches the depth used in the example above
Large culvert pipe (18-24 in diameter)6 to 8 in beddingLarger pipe needs a thicker cushion to prevent shifting
Driveway base above the culvert8 to 12 in total baseBedding plus a separate compacted base course carries traffic load
French drain or perforated pipe3 to 4 in beddingLighter loads allow a shallower bedding layer

Bags or bulk delivery?

For a short culvert run like a single driveway crossing, the total tonnage is often small enough that bagged gravel from a hardware store is competitive with delivery. Once you’re past a ton or two, bulk delivery almost always wins on price per ton, plus it saves you from hauling dozens of 50 lb bags by hand.

  • Under 1 to 2 tons, bagged can worka short, narrow culvert bed like the 1.75 ton example above sits right at the edge where either option is reasonable.
  • Above 2 tons, order bulkmost suppliers have a delivery minimum, and bulk pricing per ton drops fast once you clear it.
  • Check truck access to the sitedump trucks need a clear, solid path to the culvert location, especially if it’s mid-driveway or across a yard.
  • Order a little extraa partial extra ton at delivery is far cheaper than a second delivery fee if you come up short.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the permit checkmany jurisdictions require a permit and set a minimum pipe size for driveway culverts, and non-compliant culverts can be forced to be redone.
  • Using crushed stone when drainage matters more than firmnesspea gravel drains better but compacts less; crushed stone compacts firmer but holds more fines, so pick based on what the pipe needs.
  • Not compacting bedding before laying pipeloose bedding settles under load, which can leave the pipe unsupported in spots and lead to sagging or cracking.
  • Forgetting cover material above the pipethis calculator estimates bedding under and around the pipe; backfill and cover above the pipe up to grade may need additional material.

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • The trench is measured as a simple rectangle: length times width.
  • Bedding depth is uniform across the entire trench footprint.
  • A single waste percentage covers spillage and compaction loss.
  • The estimate covers bedding material only, not backfill above the pipe or the driveway surface itself.
  • Material weight per cubic yard is based on the selected gravel type’s typical dry weight.

Common questions

How deep should culvert bedding gravel be?

4 to 6 in is standard for most residential driveway culverts, going deeper for larger pipe diameters.

Should I use pea gravel or crushed stone for bedding?

Pea gravel drains better and is easier to shovel and level. Crushed stone compacts firmer, which helps under heavier driveway traffic.

Do I need a permit to install a driveway culvert?

Often yes, especially if the ditch is part of a public road right-of-way. Check with your local road or public works department first.

How much cover do I need above the pipe?

This varies by pipe size and traffic load, generally 12 in minimum under a driveway, more for larger pipe. Check local standards.

Is bagged gravel cheaper than bulk for a small culvert?

For very small jobs under a ton or so, bagged can be competitive. Past that, bulk delivery usually wins on price per ton.
