Material profile

For a 40 ft × 9 ft wall (360 sq ft) with 40 sq ft of openings, you need 320 sq ft of net stucco coverage. Using a traditional three-coat system at 25 sq ft per 80 lb bag, that comes to 15 bags with a 10% waste allowance, plus 2 bags of bonding/finish coat material — about $314 total at $18 per bag and $22 per finish bag.

How many stucco bags do common wall sizes need?

These figures use the traditional three-coat system at 25 sq ft per 80 lb bag and a 10% waste allowance.

How to calculate how many stucco mix bags you need

units = ( wall area − openings ) × (1+waste) ÷ coverage per unit
  1. Measure the wall Multiply length by height in feet to get gross wall area.
  2. Subtract openings Deduct the total square footage of doors, windows, and other openings not being stuccoed.
  3. Add your waste allowance Multiply net area by 1 plus your waste percentage (10% is typical) to cover texture buildup and spillage.
  4. Divide by coverage per bag Divide the adjusted area by the bag’s rated coverage (25 sq ft for three-coat, 40 sq ft for one-coat) and round up.
  5. Add finish or bonding coat bags Order roughly 1 bonding/finish bag for every 12 base bags, rounded up.

Worked example

Here’s the math for a 40 ft × 9 ft wall with 40 sq ft of openings using a traditional three-coat system.

  • Wall length × height40 ft × 9 ft = 360 sq ft
  • Openings deducted40 sq ft
  • Net stucco area320 sq ft
  • Area with 10% waste352 sq ft
  • Stucco bags needed (25 sq ft/bag)15 bags
  • Bonding/finish coat bags (1 per 12 bags)2 bags
  • Estimated material cost15 × $18 + 2 × $22 = $314

Typical wall sizes and bag quantities

Small addition (30×9 ft)250 sq ft7 bags
Single-story home exterior (150×9 ft)1,200 sq ft33 bags
Chimney chase (6×20 ft)120 sq ft4 bags
Garden wall (40×4 ft)160 sq ft5 bags

Ordering stucco by the pallet

Stucco mix is typically sold in 80 lb bags, with roughly 49 bags per pallet. Ordering by the full pallet often gets a better per-bag price and avoids running short mid-coat, since batches need to be mixed and applied within their working time. Always order a few extra bags — running out mid-wall creates a visible seam where coats meet.

  • Small jobs (under 10 bags)Buy individually; delivery minimums rarely apply
  • Medium jobs (10–40 bags)Compare pallet pricing — you may already be close to a full pallet
  • Large jobs (40+ bags)Order by the pallet and confirm the supplier can hold your lot number for color consistency

Common mistakes

  • Not deducting openingsDoors, windows, and vents reduce the area that actually needs stucco
  • Confusing one-coat and three-coat coverageA three-coat system needs roughly 40% more bags per sq ft than a one-coat system
  • Skipping the finish/bonding coat in the orderThe base coat bags alone don’t include the finish layer — order it separately
  • Underestimating waste on textured finishesHeavy dash or Santa Barbara finishes use more material than smooth finishes; bump waste to 15%
  • Mixing bags from different lots for the finish coatColor and texture can vary slightly between production lots on visible finish coats
  • Not accounting for corners and returnsWrap-around walls and corners add surface area that a flat length × height measurement misses

What this calculator assumes

Adjust your result if your project differs from these.

  • Coverage figures (25 sq ft for three-coat, 40 sq ft for one-coat, 30 sq ft for acrylic finish) are manufacturer averages per bag or pail.
  • Openings for doors, windows, and vents are subtracted from gross wall area before waste is applied.
  • The default 10% waste allowance covers texture buildup, spillage, and minor rework.
  • Bonding/finish coat bags are estimated at roughly 1 per 12 base coat bags.
  • Bag and pail counts are rounded up to the nearest whole unit.
  • Pricing is a regional estimate — confirm current bag prices with your supplier.

Common questions

How much does a bag of stucco cover?

An 80 lb bag of traditional three-coat stucco covers about 25 sq ft per coat. One-coat systems cover more, around 40 sq ft per bag.

One-coat vs three-coat stucco – how much material difference is there?

One-coat systems need roughly 40% fewer bags for the same wall area, since they combine the base and finish into one application.

How do I calculate openings for windows and doors?

Measure the width × height of each door, window, and vent, then subtract the total from your gross wall area before calculating bags.

How many bags per pallet of stucco?

Standard 80 lb bags typically ship 49 bags per pallet. Confirm with your specific supplier since pallet counts vary.

Do I need a separate bonding or finish coat?

Yes. Base coat bags don’t include the finish or bonding layer — budget roughly 1 additional bag for every 12 base bags.

How much waste should I add for stucco?

10% is standard for smooth finishes on flat walls. Increase to 15% or more for heavily textured finishes or walls with lots of corners.

Can I mix stucco from different brands or lots?

Avoid mixing brands, and try to use the same lot number for visible finish coats to prevent color and texture variation.

How does texture affect stucco coverage?

Heavier textures like dash or Santa Barbara finish use more material per sq ft than a smooth trowel finish — add extra waste for these.

How much stucco do I need for a garage vs a full house?

A typical 24×8 ft garage wall with a door opening needs about 5 bags of one-coat stucco, while a 150 ft perimeter single-story home needs roughly 33 bags.

What's the cost difference between one-coat and three-coat systems?

One-coat systems generally cost less overall since they need fewer bags per sq ft, even though the material itself may be priced similarly per bag.
